PURSUING THEIR DREAMS: RECENT VENTURES STARTED BY STUDENTS
We want to celebrate SU students who have recently created ventures while in school or right out of school. The business ventures range from security products to personal training to fertilizer products, and are located on and off of the Syracuse Hill. All of the ventures listed below participated in the Syracuse Panasci Business Plan Competition, and some started out in the Couri Hatchery, our on-campus incubator. We look forward to watching these ventures grow and encourage you to buy their products and services.
Defenshield Inc. Entrepreneur: William Collins
Venture: Defenshield was founded in 2002 in response to the need to protect security personnel in airports after September 11, 2001. Since then, Defenshield’s Mobile Defensive Fighting Positions (MDFP’s) have been deployed around the world and are saving the lives of a diverse range of customers including the US Marines, US Navy, US Air Force, the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, in courthouses, at military bases, and at nuclear facilities.
Fresh Cut Florals
Entrepreneur: Shelley Kohan, Erica Fand, Meghan Kohl, Lauren Kopach, and Erin Wilson
Venture: Fresh Cut Florals won first place for their business concept “Fresh Cut Florals” at the Venture Adventure Undergraduate Business Plan Competition, hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship of Colorado State on April 21 and 22. This win, by part of the team, came at the same time the balance of the team was winning the $25,000 first place in the Panasci Business Plan Competition at Syracuse University.
What The Crepe, Entrepreneur: Justin McKeon
Venture: After graduating in 2005, Justin decided to open a business a creaparie after following success stories while studying abroad in London. At his side was Adam Duke who helped to develop their signature crepe recipes. They opened their doors in November of 2006 and can be found in the Campus Plaza on Marshall Street
Tangelewood Gardens, Entrepreneur: Don Stanton
Venture: Tangelwood Gardens captured first place and received $25,000 towards the start-up of the company in the 2003 Panasci Competition. The business ages and stores horse manure and turns it into organically rich fertilizer which is then packaged and sold. Stanton is a graduate of the EEE program.
Funk N Waffles, Entrepreneur: Kyle Corea and Adam Gold
Venture: Funk 'n Waffles is a new musical-culinary phenomenon. They opened for business in January of 2006 in the Marshall Street Campus Plaza. At Funk 'n Waffles they serve “your belly and your mind” by creating savory waffles and a musical experience for their customers.
Precious Time of New York, Entrepreneur: Drew Austin Greenfield
Venture: Precious Time is a concierge company that targets college students. They opened for business in October 2005. The value the company provides is saving life’s most precious commodity, time by providing a personal concierge service to the Syracuse student body. The business is currently located in the Falcone Center in the Whitman School of Management.
Karma Fitness, Entrepreneur: Alex Davidow and Max Deibel
Venture: Karma Fitness opened in November of 2006. Karma offers yoga, pilates, fusion, and spinning as an alternative to the on-campus gym. They are located above J. Michaels on Marshall Street
