Council of Logistics Management Intern Program: CLM posts a listing
containing internship opportunities from companies that offer intern positions
for students interested in a career in logistics. Once at the website,
select Career Center, then sign onto the program by entering your first
and last name, e-mail address, and the password: apprentice (all lowercase).
It is very important to examine the listing of opportunities and match
your educational and work skills with the requirements each employer has
indicated. First impressions mean a lot. Don’t miss the opportunity to
impress a potential employer by sending a resume that does not match the
skill set that is needed. Once you have identified a match, send a sharp,
concise, prepared resume directly to the employer as soon as possible
via the method the employer indicated. The data base of opportunities
can be searched and sorted by the following criteria: (1) Academic Level,
(2) Academic Major, (3) City, (4) Company Name, (5) Country, (6) Full/Part
time, (7) State/Providence. Select the criteria that most interests you
and click on submit at the bottom of the page. Company Name, State, and
Country have drop down menus. Highlight the company, or state, or country
that you want for a specific search and click on submit. All companies
matching your criteria will be displayed. If there are no matching companies,
you should broaden your search criteria. Before you can begin another
search, you must first click on clear. This will clear all previous criteria
you selected. If you would like to see all of the available opportunities,
do not fill in any of the search criteria. Just click on submit. (2/2/03)

Sort Manager: A full-time career opportunity exists
with the ground operation for a global overnight parcel delivery
system. If you're interested, please contact Prof. Easton
(3-3463) (4/9/02)
Internship at Compaq: Part One As a product approaches
the End of Life phase, component parts may become labeled obsolete
or excess. Such a label may not always be accurate as data is not
readily available to provide better information to make that decision.
As a result, material may be inadvertently scrapped when there are
potential alternate uses. The intern will work with EOL teams
to develop tools that will provide the teams with better information
for improved decisions that reduce obsolescence costs without adversely
affecting customer satisfaction. These tools will also allow
the EOL teams to extend the horizon, thereby enabling earlier detection
of problems.
Part Two The issue of alternate uses also plagues the manufacturing
sites. As part of the daily operations, the ability to quickly
reference alternate uses of material is paramount. The current
review process is mostly a manual one, whereby an analyst works
a file of SKU’s (stock keeping units or part numbers) to identify
alternate uses. The analyst will check multiple systems on-line,
and draw conclusions as appropriate. This is an inefficient
process, and there is a potential for errors. Currently there
is a Green Belt team in place to enhance the work process related
to obsolescence. One of the expected outputs of that team
is a tool-driven work process that is less prone to errors and allows
for management inspection and reporting. The intern would
be responsible for finalizing customer requirements, developing
and implementing the tool.
Desired Skills Computer Skills: Visual
Basic & application development; Working knowledge of
SQL Server and MS Access, specifically database design, creating
queries, macros and forms/user interfaces, and developing automated
data feeds from various data sources. Manufacturing knowledge:
Understanding of MRP concepts including bill of materials, scheduling,
material cost; and inventory principles. Business skills:
Ability to translate business processes into database tools, communicate
with and train analysts, and manage multiple priorities. Must have
solid presentation, writing skills and interpersonal skills to complete
the project in a timely fashion. Education: 1st year graduate
student in business, CS, industrial engineering or other related
discipline. Contact the SOM Career Center if interested.
(3/18/02)

If interested, please leave a resume with Carolyn Salanger or Ed
Pulaski in Career Center. (3/13/02)

Squibb is interested in junior supply chain management students
for a summer intern position. See Ed Pulaski in the SOM Career

Local Intern Possibility with Cooper Industries. There may
be an opportunity for a Supply Chain major for a paid internship
for the remainder of the semester. Pay to be $9 or $10 per
hour at 10 hours per week. There are a couple of projects.
One project involves small parcel shipments. As a company, Cooper
Industries uses UPS, FedEx, Airborne, DHL to ship small parcels
domestically. Each has their own pricing, their own
tier discounts/thresholds which makes it very difficult to determine
who actually is the least expensive carrier. In other words,
everyone thinks Airborne is less expensive than FedEx or UPS but
are they really if we throw their volume into UPS or FedEx.
So this project would be to construct a model that would permit
us to compare apples to apples the cost of one company with another
and the impact of volume increases on the pricing. It would
involve compiling shipment information from these various companies,
understanding the pricing structures of each and creating a model
that equalizes the price between them. The second project involves
creating a shipment profile as to what a typical day looks like
(for example, what percent of the shipments are going air, ground,
LTL, TL, regional and what it costs). Within the past year
we have been capturing shipment information from various Cooper
divisions. But because each division has their own FAK (freight
all kinds) rates and their own discounts we really do not know who
is receiving the best price for their transportation. Our preference
is to work in the small parcel problem first followed by the second
problem. We would be interested in working with a senior or
a graduate student. Although this is a Cooper project the
student would be working with Gary LaPoint. You may contact
Gary directly if have interest in the position. His email
address is Gary.LaPoint@crouse-hinds.com. (2/27/02)
