In his lecture titled “Vanguard - The Case for Low Costs and Investor Advocacy,” Hagerty makes a compelling case for the Vanguard business model, which emphasizes low-cost investing and puts clients first and prospects last. “Vanguard is the only mutual fund company in the world that is client-owned,” he noted. “Family-owned or shareholder-owned funds have that additional layer looking for profits.” With that layer removed, Vanguard’s expense ratio averages .20 percent, versus the industry average of .71 percent. “A lot of people who are money managers for other funds put their own money in our products, recognizing the value of our low-cost model.”

Hagerty came to Vanguard from an accounting background, having served in public accounting and the banking industry before joining the firm 12 years ago. Since then, he’s served in various capacities in Vanguard’s institutional businesses, including management of the client services organization and the participant services group before he was asked to manage the marketing group. He holds a master’s in communication from Villanova University and a bachelor’s in accounting from St. Bonaventure University.

Whitman’s Martin and Phyllis Berman Distinguished Lecture Series brings prominent business leaders to Whitman to share their expertise and perspectives with the Syracuse University community and Central New York executives.

In this lecture, titled “Driving Performance Improvement through Superior Pricing,” he uses disguised but actual numbers from client situations to shed light on successful and misguided pricing strategies and pricing across the product lifecycle.

At McKinsey, Baker leads knowledge development initiatives and has published articles in CMO Magazine, McKinsey Quarterly, and Harvard Business Review. He is a co-author of the soon to be released book The Price Advantage. Before joining McKinsey, Baker worked in the industrial and high-tech sectors. He earned a PhD and a master’s degree from Harvard University and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from MIT.

Baker's lecture was part of the Marketing Fall Speaker Series in the Whitman School, co-sponsored by the Department of Marketing and the Whitman student chapter of the American Marketing Association.

With some $2.6 billion in annual sales, Panera has been the top-performing stock in the restaurant industry for ten years running and, says Davis, reported 35 percent growth year-over-year for the most recent quarter—an impressive achievement in this tough economy.

Davis spoke in the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University on October 28, 2009, as part of Management Major Awareness Week, which featured a series of events to bring visibility to the new management major available for undergraduate students.
