Research: Shoko Kato’s primary research interests are factors that promote entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship and development entrepreneurship. She has extensive work experience in the public sector and international development, where her job responsibilities included governance and public sector reform projects in developing countries. Many of her research interests are derived from this experience, and she is passionate in researching what fosters entrepreneurship and the social impact of entrepreneurship. Her dissertation explores the drivers of entrepreneurship, or what draws people to startups, and she uses hedonic psychology to examine why entrepreneurs persevere in their endeavors. Her current projects include the application of RBV (resource-based view) to the social entrepreneurship context and performance assessment of social entrepreneurs.

Research: Mariana Lebron's primary areas of research are at the intersection of business strategy, corporate governance, organizational culture, and citizenship. Through an analysis of strategic change management processes and top management team leadership, she examines how infusing citizenship into firm strategy impacts performance. Current research examines the multilevel effects of diversity and board of director characteristics on corporate environmental/social responsibility strategies and performance.

Robert is interested in understanding entrepreneurial activity across contexts. Robert has published in several peer reviewed academic journals including Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Family Business Review and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. He has presented at many leading conferences including The Academy of Management (AOM), the Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference (BCERC), the Family Enterprise Research Conference (FERC) and The European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM). Robert’s current research interests and projects include strategic entrepreneurship and growth.
Prior to his PhD studies, Robert was managing a global collaborative research project as the Assistant Director of the STEP Project at Babson College. STEP is the largest collaborative research project bringing together over 40 universities from around the world to explore entrepreneurship in the family context. Robert has been active in the Family Firm Institute (FFI) as a New England Chapter Board Member and 25th Anniversary Conference Committee Member. Robert has also been quoted in regional, national and international media publications including the Wall Street Journal.

Research: Sharon Simmons’ primary research stream focuses on institutional and cognitive influences on the entry and reentry decisions of entrepreneurs.Facets of Sharon’s research interests are the gender gap in entrepreneurship and the commercialization strategies of entrepreneurs who spin-off university technology. Sharon has extensive senior management experience with a multinational professional services firm, where her job responsibilities included the development of national tax planning strategies for medium and large firms. Sharon is also an entrepreneur. Her experience with entrepreneurship includes the ownership of a family restaurant enterprise that was successful for over 30 years and as the principal of a real estate limited liability company. Her dissertation explores the reentry decisions of ex-entrepreneurs and uses institutional theory to examine the strategic career choices of stigmatized entrepreneurs. Her other research projects explore the capital structure decisions of female entrepreneurs and the role of firm absorptive capacity in the competitive advantages that firms obtain from university-industry collaborations.
