From the Dean

For close to 90 years, the Whitman PhD program has produced outstanding graduates that have excelled both academically and professionally, moving on to work at some of the top academic establishments in the world. To provide students with the specialized skills necessary for an education in management, the Whitman PhD program offers six major fields of study.

Now more than ever, educators must enter the classroom with a broad-based knowledge of our global economy along with the ability to adapt to the ever-changing field of management. Through independent study and close collaboration with Whitman faculty, doctoral students are able to achieve excellence in teaching while conducting key research for the greater benefit of society. Whitman provides ample opportunities to gain teaching experience through graduate assistantships and through Syracuse University’s award-winning Future Professoriate Program.

With 11 centers and institutes catering to specific industry needs, 20 team rooms with state-of-the-art equipment, and computer clusters throughout the building, Whitman doctoral students are given the resources they need to achieve success. Students also have online access to CRSP, Compustat, and other research databases via the Wharton Research Data Series (WRDS).

As a result of the academic rigor of Whitman’s PhD program, many doctoral students have published in some of the best academic journals in the country including Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Operations Management, Strategic Management Journal, and Organizational Science.

We are confident that Whitman’s doctoral program will enhance your prospects for success, and we welcome talented students who want to make an impact. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions and as always we invite you to visit in order to see if Whitman is the right fit for you.

Sincerely,
Melvin T. Stith
