Shaker A. Zahra, the Robert E. Buuck Chair of Entrepreneurship and Professor of Strategy and Organization and academic director of the Gary S. Holmes Entrepreneurship Center in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, has been named the 2009 Falcone Distinguished Entrepreneurship Scholar by the Department of Entrepreneurship & Emerging Enterprises at the Whitman School of Management. Zahra will share his knowledge in a lecture titled "Studying Entrepreneurship on a Worldwide Stage" on Oct. 30 at 9:15 a.m. in Room 306 of the Whitman School.
Zahra has served as the academic co-director of Carlson Ventures Enterprises as well as the founding co-director of the Center for Integrative Leadership at University of Minnesota. Previously, Zahra was Paul T. Babson Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson College and Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship at Georgia State University. He has been a visiting or guest professor at several universities in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
Zahra's research focuses on entrepreneurship and national policy, especially in global technology-based industries and companies; international entrepreneurship; and corporate entrepreneurship and capability development. His research has appeared in leading journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Organizational Behavior Decision Sciences, Information Systems Research, Industrial & Corporate Change, Research Policy, Human Relations, among others. He has also published, edited, or co-edited 12 books and conference proceedings. His research has received several grants and awards including an honorary PhD from Jonkoping International Business School, Sweden.
Zahra has been a consultant to several prominent companies and organizations in the U.S. and abroad. He has received several awards for his excellent service and teaching, including the best teacher in the MBA program and the mentor award from the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management. He earned his PhD at the University of Mississippi, his MBA at National University in San Diego, and his bachelor’s degree at Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
