Services

The Whitman Career Center offers current students a variety of services to assist in career planning and professional development:

Career Education Workshops
Career education workshops offer students instruction on pertinent issues related to their job searches and career development. Some of the workshop topics include resume development, networking, and interviewing. Consult the Whitman Career Center link on Blackboard for specific workshop topics, dates, and times.

One-on-One Coaching Appointments
In addition to developing important career skills through workshops, Whitman students are welcomed by a counseling team that is committed to the development of resume and interview techniques on an individual basis. These one-on-one coaching appointments provide the opportunity for students to refine communication skills, develop a career strategy, or increase their visibility with a polished resume and cover letter. Appointments may be made through the Whitman Career Center reception desk in person in Suite 115 or by calling (315) 443-4140.

Time spent during walk-in hours is intended to assist students with quick questions and immediate needs as meetings are limited to 15 minute sessions. Walk-ins are available on a first come, first served basis.

Virtual Services

Whitman’s Career Center also provides a variety of virtual services to students which are accessible 24 hours a day.

OrangeLink
The SU job posting board, OrangeLink, lists information related to job postings for all SU students and offers a career search management system to keep track of applications, resumes, and new postings. Students can apply to job postings and post their resumes to specialty resume books, which are shared with national recruiters. Students also have access to corporate contacts through this database to support their independent job search.

Whitman Career Center on Blackboard
You already use Blackboard for your classes, but did you know that there is a wealth of career information available as well? Click on the “Whitman Career Center” link on Blackboard to access information on career workshop schedules, effective resume  writing, career information specific to your major, and much more. This comprehensive resource is a tremendous asset at any time—and  you may find it comes in handy at 3 a.m. when you are doing your last minute interview preparation by using the Online Career Workbook. Information on databases to use to research companies in preparation for interacting with them is also highlighted.

Research Databases
Vault online career library is provided for student use in researching companies, industries, and specific professions, and to find companies geographically. SU’s Bird Library, in partnership with the Whitman School, maintains a variety of subscriptions to database resources that afford a student detailed and in-depth information about industries, companies, and contacts. The Bird Reference Librarian specializes in business topics and is available to tutor students on relevant resources available at the library. Students also have access to Hoover’s, Lexis-Nexis, Million-Dollar, and many other databases.
