The H.H. Franklin Bridge-Fund Award for Summer Research
Mission & Purpose
The mission of the H.H. Franklin Center for Supply Chain Management is to enhance Syracuse University's position as a nationally recognized leader in supply chain management education and research. Applicable research spans a range of methodologies and disciplines, including applied mathematics, computer science, economics, engineering, information technology, finance, marketing, and operations research, among others.
To foster its research mission, the Center announces the H.H. Franklin Bridge-Fund Award program. This program targets researchers submitting proposals to competitive, merit-based programs in areas related to supply chain management. The bridge-fund award serves as a contingency fund for a pending, or soon to be pending, proposal to an external funding agency. If the external funding agency does not fund the proposal, then a $15,000 bridge-fund award will support preliminary or continued research during summer 2006. The bridge-fund award is expected to result in stronger, more compelling resubmissions to external sponsors and in manuscript(s) for submission to top journals.
The goals of the H.H. Franklin Bridge-Fund Award are to (1) assist SU faculty in strengthening their research programs as measured by receipt of external funding from prestigious sources and by publication in the very top journals, and (2) promote innovative research in supply chain management including, but not limited to, such areas as:
- purchasing management
- production management
- transportation management
- warehouse management
- demand management
- inventory stocking and replenishment models
- short life-cycle product management
- postponement and the bullwhip effect
- value of information in supply chains
- consumer choice and assortment decisions
- supply chain contracting, coordination, and game-theoretic models
- global sourcing
- vehicle routing
- managing product variety
- international aspects of managing supply chains
- global e-commerce
- channels management
- optimized auctions, models, and algorithms
- combinatorial auctions and market design
- economic models of supply chains
- Internet based decision support systems
- enterprise resource planning and e-manufacturing systems
- e-commerce software development
- software agents
- sense and response technologies (e.g., early warning and correction of supply chain problems)
Eligibility & Selection Criteria
The program is open to all full time tenure-track SU faculty. Applicants must plan to submit proposals to external sponsors in late summer through early fall 2005, and expect to receive notification of the sponsor's decision by May 1, 2006.
The program is designed to encourage research proposals to external funding agencies and, in the event of rejection, provide support to help researchers improve the proposal for the next try. Each bridge-fund award proposal must be associated with a pending, or soon to be pending, proposal to an external funding agency.
Proposals will be evaluated by an outside review board according to (1) the likely impact on the field of logistics and supply chain management, (2) the potential for receipt of external funding and for publication in top journals, (3) productivity and qualifications of the applicant as indicated by record of research achievement and potential.
Bridge Fund Award winners will be contacted on/after May 1, 2006 to learn the status of their external grant application. Since receipt of funds is contingent upon unfavorable consideration by the external sponsor, awardees will be asked to provide a copy of reviewers' comments and a brief response conveying how bridge-fund support will allow key concerns to be addressed.
While each H.H. Franklin Bridge-Fund Award is to a single investigator, proposed research that is part of a larger interdisciplinary research grant application to an external sponsor is welcome. There will be up to two awards for summer 2006.
Use of Funds
H.H. Franklin funds are to be used in a manner consistent with the program goals, and to facilitate resubmission of a competitive proposal and the publication of the research in top journals (e.g., graduate/undergraduate student support, summer salary, and research-related expenses).
Application Materials and Deadline
The application must be submitted via email by 5:00 p.m. on Friday September 16, 2005. Applicants will be notified in December 2005.
External Funding Requirements for Award Recipients
The H.H. Franklin Bridge-Fund Award recipients are expected to provide copies of submitted proposals, interim working papers, and/or subsequent archival journal publications resulting from grant research. Acknowledgement of support in published material will be appreciated.
