Mentoring Program
The Whitman Accounting Alumni Council has created a mentoring program to allow current Whitman students majoring in accounting (or those interested in majoring in accounting) to be matched with alumni in the accounting industry.

The program was created in order to provide current Whitman students with a contact in the accounting industry, who can be used as a mentor for career preparation in the accounting industry. Examples of discussion topics include: advice on different careers in accounting, tips on obtaining internships/jobs, or advice on working after college in general. This relationship should not be used to solicit employment from the mentor, unless the mentor initiates the discussion.

Whitman students interested in participating in the program need to fill out the application. All completed applications should be provided to Mitch Franklin, assistant professor of accounting, who can be contacted at (315) 443-9641. To volunteer as a mentor for a current Whitman student, please fill out the directory form.

For more information about the mentoring program, contact Cheryl Curri cheryl.curri@gmail.com or Cindy Hand chand@syr.edu.

Presentations to Students
Each semester, the Whitman Accounting Alumni Council, along with the Whitman Accounting Advisory Board, speaks to students about the field of accounting. Our goal is to inform students about different careers in accounting, advantages and disadvantages of accounting as a major, and general advice about the “working world.”

If you have unique experiences in the accounting field and are interested in speaking to Whitman students, contact Jared Kass at jskass@syr.edu.

Social Activities
The Whitman Accounting Alumni Council occasionally organizes informal social activities for alumni to network. The goal is to provide an informal setting where alumni can re-connect while having fun. To date, activities have been organized in New York City. Depending on demand, activities may be organized in other major cities in the future.

On February 4, 2012, over 50 accounting alumni and friends attended a happy hour and then the basketball game between Syracuse and St. John's at Madison Square Garden. Syracuse defeated St. John's in what appeared to be an SU favored crowd. Thanks for those who attended.

Be on the lookout for e-mails from the Council for future events.

If you have any ideas for future social events, contact Amy Marcello at amy.marcello@us.pwc.com.

Lubin House Events
The Whitman Accounting Alumni Council organizes events at Syracuse University’s Lubin House in New York City approximately twice each year. The goal of the Council’s Lubin House events is to provide more formal networking opportunities for accounting alumni. On occasion, Mevin T. Stith, dean of the Whitman School of Management, or various professors from Whitman’s Lubin School of Accounting, attend these events.

Typically, the events are organized in the summer, in order to allow Whitman students interning in the NYC area to attend, as well as in the fall/winter, in order to allow recent alumni to attend.

The next Lubin House event will take place in June 23, 2011. After that, the next event will take place in the Fall of 2011. All Whitman accounting alumni are welcome to join. Please RSVP to Tiernan Klunk at tklunk@rkco.com or Georgiana Nertea at Gnertea@eisnerllp.com if you plan on attending.

The Lubin House is located at
11 East 61st Street,
New York, NY 10021
