POLLING QUESTIONS
The results are in! Last newsletter, we asked two polling questions and here are the results:
- Q: How far do you think Syracuse Basketball will go in the NCAA tournament?
- A: The average answer was the elite eight. Unfortunately, SU fell short and lost in the second round.
- Q: Do you think Syracuse Lacrosse will be National Champions this year?
- A: SU was beaten in the quarterfinals by Maryland. 50% of the respondents thought they’d win the championship. Congrats to those that got it right! See the “SU Athletics” section below for more information on the SU Lacrosse team.
Polling question for the next newsletter:
- Q: School is out for SU students! If you could go back and relive one year on campus, which would it be and why? Some of your responses will appear in the next edition of the newsletter.
Please send your responses to SU_ACCOUNTING_ALUM@yahoo.com. Keep an eye out of the poll results in the upcoming e-newsletter.

WHITMAN UPDATE
Whitman recognized in 2011 Bloomberg Businessweek undergraduate specialty rankings
Bloomberg Businessweek recently released a ranking of specialty undergraduate business programs as a follow-up to its March 2011 undergraduate business program ranking, in which the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University held on to the 47th spot for the second year in a row. Each year, as part of its ranking of the nation’s top undergraduate business programs, Bloomberg Businessweek surveys more than 85,000 students at more than 100 top business schools and asks them to rate their program's performance in 14 academic disciplines, ranging from accounting and entrepreneurship to marketing and sustainability.
The Whitman School ranked in each specialty category. Entrepreneurship, which was not part of specialty ranking disciplines in 2010, is ranked third nationwide. The school’s program in Corporate Strategy is ranked 22nd in the country and Operations Management is ranked 26th. The Accounting program moved up six spots from 2010, to 30th in the nation. Whitman also improved seven spots and ranks 41st in Sustainability, reflecting the school’s unique Sustainable Enterprise Partnership, a collaboration between Whitman, SUNY-ESF and the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems.
Whitman also ranked in the specialty areas of International Business, Quantitative Methods, Ethics, Business Law, Financial Management and Marketing Management.

The Whitman School of Management chapter of Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), a service fraternity that includes accounting, finance and information studies majors, has been selected as one of five chapters in the nation to receive the Ernst & Young LLP Diversity Award. The recognition includes a $1,000 grant.
The Ernst & Young Diversity Award reflects the impact of the Whitman chapter on diversity and inclusiveness within BAP, the school and its community. Mitchell Franklin, assistant professor of accounting practice, advises Whitman’s BAP chapter.

iMS IN ACCOUNTING
The iMS in Accounting is the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University’s limited-residency distance learning program for accounting professionals. The iMS program features the same curriculum and faculty as the full-time MS in Accounting program at Whitman and the degree awarded is the same. Prospective students must possess a qualified undergraduate degree in accounting.
The accounting profession offers tremendous career opportunities today—in public, corporate, and not-for-profit sectors. In most states, becoming a CPA involves earning a total of 150 credit hours of collegiate training–30 hours beyond the typical undergraduate program.

MENTORING PROGRAM
This program was created in order to provide current Whitman students with a contact in the accounting industry, who can be used as a mentor for career preparation in the accounting industry. Examples of discussion topics include: advice on different careers in accounting, tips on obtaining internships/jobs, or general advice on working after college. This relationship should not be used by the student (mentee) to solicit employment from the mentor, unless the mentor initiates the discussion. There are approximately 150 Whitman students within the mentor program, with more signing up each semester.
The Accounting Alumni Council is in need of Alumni to mentor current SU students majoring, or interested in majoring in Accounting. Please contact us if you are interested.
For more information about the mentoring program, contact Cheryl Curri (cheryl.curri@gmail.com) or Cindy Hand (chand@syr.edu).
